PHYSICAL THEATRE TRAINING

CENTA co. offers ongoing physical theatre training grounded in the Suzuki Method of Actor Training and Viewpoints. Weekly sessions develop strength, control of the centre of gravity, breath support, vocal clarity and ensemble awareness through rigorous, repeatable practice.

The training strengthens presence, precision and sustained focus, forming a disciplined foundation for rehearsal and performance. Based in Western Australia, the company delivers sustained local training while establishing a hub for international performance practice.

TRAINING INFORMATION

Training is structured across Beginner / Intermediate and Advanced levels, with additional workshops and intensive formats presented locally and internationally.

Open to performers and those with a serious interest in movement and physical theatre practice. Sessions move carefully through fundamental Suzuki exercises, with detailed explanation and structured repetition to build strength, control of centre, breath, and energy. The training is broken down clearly and is suitable for complete beginners as well as those seeking to deepen and refine their existing practice. Every second week, Viewpoints follows Suzuki training to translate the physical foundation into ensemble composition, spatial awareness, and structured improvisation.

Advanced training is for those who already know the Suzuki fundamentals and core exercises. Sessions move quickly with minimal explanation, focusing on precision, stamina, and disciplined practice. These sessions are about learning advanced exercises and taking your existing practice to the next level.

Workshops offer focused training formats ranging from introductory one-day sessions to multi-day intensives. These sessions allow for a deeper dive into Suzuki-based training, Viewpoints, and other performance techniques. Workshops are delivered locally in Western Australia, as well as in national and international contexts.

The training is led by Aki Sato-Johnson, former leading actress with the Suzuki Company of Toga in Japan.

Aki trained and performed with the company internationally from 2008 – 2025, appearing in major productions including Electra, The Trojan Women and Madame de Sade. Her work with SCOT toured to over twenty-eight cities across seventeen countries.

She now leads the CENTA co. Physical Theatre training, bringing seventeen years of professional experience with the Suzuki Company of Toga into her teaching.
